This lecture series contains history of dentistry on musicians, basic knowledge of musical instruments that should be considered by dentists, case studies regarding dentistry on musicians including music splints and prostheses for musicians, and evaluation methods for outcome measurements in this area of dentistry.

About:
Teeth have an important role in playing brass, woodwind, and other instruments.
Oral conditions such as velopharyngeal closure relate to playing instruments and also to singing, and mandibular conditions can be related to playing string instruments such as a violin.

According to recent reviews, musicians can experience occupational orofacial problems caused by excessive practice or stress and dentists may address these issues.
Furthermore, malocclusion can affect wind instrumentalists’ performance and embouchure comfort.
A reported case demonstrated that a professional horn player’s performance was improved by dental correction.

Not only younger musicians but older musicians may also benefit from dental treatment of age-related orofacial issues (e.g., missing teeth) interfering with their performance ability.
In an experimental study of musical performance, objective acoustic analyzes could reveal changes in the oral cavity.
A case of prosthetic treatment in an older clarinetist with missing teeth demonstrated that objective evaluation of musical performance can aid prosthetic adjustments to facilitate musical performance on the clarinet.
Another report described objective evaluations of woodwind performance of a child who needed prosthetic rehabilitation after a tumor resection.

It is clear that dentists should be aware of other functions of the mouth besides eating speaking and swallowing, that is ‘playing music’ and should keep it under consideration when any dental treatment is performed on musicians regardless of amateur or professional.
