Implant overdentures (IOD) have a long history of use, and various clinical studies have been conducted since the 1990's on outcomes. The McGill Consensus in 2002 and the York Consensus in 2009 established the 2-Implant Overdenture (2-IOD) as the standard treatment for an edentulous mandible. The need for this minimally invasive and low-cost dental treatment has been increasing along with the number of super-aged societies in the world. In edentulous patients, there are several types of attachments for implant overdentures, e.g., ball, Locator, magnetic and bar. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of Locator attachment, for example, are selective retentive force, lower height to abutment, and less rotation of dentures. However, placement of dentures can be difficult for older patients who have poor dexterity or are under nursing care.
In this talk, I will present the characteristics of each attachment and how to select the appropriate type for implant overdentures, focusing on the following points:
